Final

The Final paper is due on Dec 16, 5PM on your blog. Please be sure to post an outline and the topic right now, if you have not done so yet. The paper needs to feature at least ten quoted sources to show that you can use citations. Then review your entire blog and correct mistakes you can find. This is also a chance to add elements that are missing. I will check each blog for completeness beginning 12/17 until grading day a week later. So far, in general terms, I am very pleased with your efforts! Have fun!

Make sure your blogs are complete, please

Today by the end of class, the following elements have to be in place:

 1. The topic of your final paper
1.1 An outline of your final paper
2. Three reviews, ratings, and reports from reading all three interviews of your peers
3. Your three interviews, country reports, interview preparations and execution reports, as well as at least two transcriptions.
Today I will be asking you in class to introduce your final paper and tell us what you have learned (or missed) in class. We will not meet next week since I am out of town on university business, and the last chance to meet with me (outside of office hours) is during the time of 5-8:30 pm on finals day. I will be in my office during that time. We cannot use our rooms because a different class is having a final in it. So we cannot meet there.

How long does the final paper have to be? Where will the final be? Please read this carefully.

... long enough to make your arguments, explain your case, and develop your idea. Minimum is 6 pages (1800 words) and you need to cite at least ten resources (books, articles, urls) and append a "works cited" portion on the blog post.
The next meeting dates:
December 2, 2010 regular time and location
December 9, 2010 on-line work (no meeting in class) I am at a conference in the TC
December 16, 2010 final from 5-8PM New location: my office LH 116 (our room is booked by a different class and our time slot would be 6:30-9PM; so I suggest we keep our regular time slot and make my office the meeting place. Students are free to show up or not to discuss their class work. The final is optional for students because all of your work is available on-line at all times.
I suggest you use the time-slot of the final to discuss any open questions you have regarding our class.

Review your blogs and eliminate a few pivotal errors, if they exist. When you quote a source, you need a "works cited" page- not sited, sighted, or  anything like that.

Thursday, Dec 2 is our last meeting together because I'll be out of town 12/9. You need to finish you final projects by the final's date. The meeting for finals is optional for students. I will be sitting in my offce to meet those who want to see me. Your blog needs to be complete by final's day at 5PM.

Winner of the first and second interview competitions

Congratulations to Hequiu Liu for winning the first interview competition.
Congratulations to Sanjina Karki for winning the second competition.
The third competion is open because most students did not rate the third interview.

On Thursday, we'll meet to evaluate the second and third interview winners. This time, I am asking you to tabulate your grades again and link the results to your interview 2 review. Then write 3-4 sentences for each criterion you used to evaluate the interview and post that comment.
1. Create a new post with the title: Interview 3 review
2. Read all papers according to the established guidelines (use the parameters from the salmon sheet I gave you last week, write the results into a google docs page and tabulate as you go)
3. Write a 1-page review of your best paper. If more than one person share the same results, write two or three such reviews. Explain in your review what you liked about that interview. Only interviews with transcriptions can be rated highly. Every student is allowed to not include one transcript, if an interview didn't turn out well.

-----------
Post the topic of your final paper immediately, if not done yet. This is another separate post.

Review how to quote sources and how to write the "Works cited" page on LEO. With the topic of your final paper, also post the outline of the final paper. I want to see whether it's logical.

Can I change questions, and what if I cannot find three people from one country?

Yes, you own your questions and you can change them. Just be sure to show the questions asked in your transcript and possibly also in your text about the preparations to the interview. It is a good idea to re-print objectives and questions as part of the preparation text. You could even explain why you changed questions.
The idea for three people from one country is the ability to cross reference information. If you cannot find three, then select someone from a different country. And, of course, a new country report is needed in that case.
Have fun. Be gentle. Write exciting reports.
